FlackWild Heath Secures Lottery Boost for Community Biodiversity Vision
Significant win for local natural environment, after the FlackWild Heath secures National Lottery funding!
Flackwell Heath is celebrating a significant win for its local natural environment, after the FlackWild Heath initiative secured £19,000 in National Lottery funding — a development hailed by residents as a major step forward for the village’s green future.
The announcement follows the spring committee meeting of the Flackwell Heath Residents Association (FHRA), where committee members welcomed the funding as both a validation of local ambition and a springboard for long-term local environmental improvement. The grant, awarded following an application submitted in late 2025 will, with support from Chiltern Rangers, be deployed over the next two years to enhance biodiversity across several key village sites.
At the heart of the vision is the Heathfest school field, which is set to be reshaped into a vibrant, nature-rich landscape. Plans include planting native hedgerows along the perimeter, introducing oak saplings, and establishing wildflower boundaries — all while preserving a central open space for community use.
However, the ambition stretches far beyond a single location. Additional areas such as Whitepit Lane, the recreation ground and Orchard Green are also being considered, reflecting a flexible and wide-ranging approach to environmental enhancement.
Crucially, the project builds on proven success. A previous biodiversity initiative at Orchard Green has already demonstrated the potential for lasting impact, having been adopted and maintained by the parish council and expanded with features such as bug hotels and a stumpery. This model now offers a blueprint for wider replication across the village.
Community engagement is expected to play a central role in the project’s success. Plans are underway for a dedicated information stall at the June market, alongside ideas for branded plaques, seed giveaways and potential collaborations with well-known gardening figures to raise awareness and participation.
While formal permissions from landowners and stakeholders will still be required, the mood within the FHRA is one of optimism and momentum. With funding secured and a clear vision in place, FlackWild Heath stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when community initiative meets environmental purpose.
