Community Speed Watch

Speeding through Flackwell Heath isn't just antisocial — it's dangerous. The Flackwell Heath Community Speed Watch (CSW) is a resident-led team taking direct action, running roadside speed checks at multiple locations across the village using professional equipment and working in partnership with the Police.

The programme is part of a nationwide Community Speedwatch initiative. When a speeding driver is recorded, their details are passed to the Police — repeat offenders receive a formal warning letter. It works, and it works because residents show up.

What we do

Our team of volunteers run regular daytime sessions at known problem spots around the village, recording vehicle speeds and reporting offenders through official channels. Sessions are flexible, low-pressure, and genuinely make a difference to the roads we all use every day.

Thanks to an FHRA Community Grant, the team is fully equipped — high-visibility jackets, a traffic counter, speed recording equipment, and a mobile CSW sign are all provided. You won't need to buy a thing.

The FHRA is also funding permanent Community Speed Watch signs to be added to existing village entrance signs, in partnership with the Parish Council — making clear to every driver entering Flackwell Heath that the scheme is active.

Join the team

We need more volunteers to increase the frequency and coverage of speed checks across the village. Here's what's involved:

  • Free to join — all equipment provided
  • Open to all residents aged 18+
  • As little as one hour per month
  • Flexible daytime sessions to fit around your schedule
  • Full training provided on equipment and safe operation

The more of us there are, the more ground we can cover — and the safer our roads become.
